AIRAH'S 100 FACES

#034

ACT Division Formation

AIRAH’s Australian Capital Territory division was formed in 1981 with Geoff Cullen at the helm.

The first-ever meeting of the committee took place on April 23, 1981. It was attended by 18 people, including D Elms, federal councillor and senior member of AIRAH’s Victorian division. The minutes read: “The meeting was convened to canvass the question of whether an ACT division of AIRAH should be established.”

Following a short presentation, Elms answered a number of questions on AIRAH, including details of our operations and activities.

The meeting lasted for an hour and 40 minutes, concluding with a vote to confirm the establishment of the ACT division. Twelve in attendance – G. Cullen, L. Campbell, M. Eisner, D. Rose, R. Holt, G. O’Neill, J. Kirkpatrick, A. Gilbert, H. Taylor, F. Wolf, J. Hutchinson and P. Moran – volunteered to serve as inaugural committee members.

A subsequent awareness-raising campaign was delivered at the 1993 AIRAH AGM, led by ACT’s then-president Keith Hind. He presented a publication titled ACT News and Views, complete with minutes from the division’s first-ever meeting.
